Meet Dr. Nelson
(she/her)
Growing up in my household and community, mental health was not a phrase or concept that was discussed. I was surrounded by people who exuded “strong black woman” energy that amounted to carrying the weight of the world with a smile and messages of “making a way out of no way” with minimal support. I quickly learned that the pressure of navigating the world with unspoken, and sometimes explicit, expectations can lead to struggles and hardships that love and prayer cannot fix alone.
Although therapy and mental health were taboo, I felt a deep seeded pull to help those who no longer felt capable of smiling through the pain and those who realized society’s mold no longer fit them. I knew from an early age that I wanted to use the warmth, resilience, and collaborative nature my family was built on to bring the necessary knowledge and expertise back to my community to help those ready to step into the life they want and deserve.
Throughout my education journey, from my Bachelor’s in Psychology at West Texas A&M University to my Master’s in Sport and Performance Psychology and my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the University of Denver, I was able to actualize my desire to serve underrepresented populations and assist them with living and loving however they choose. As a therapist, I aspire to meet my clients where they are in their process. I use the warmth, resilience, and collaborative nature instilled in me to show up as my full self in the hope that it will naturally invite those around me to do the same. The therapeutic space that I hold with my clients is co-created and serves as a vehicle to openly lead us with vulnerability to deeper understanding, acceptance, and when desired and necessary, change.
